A 18 year old girl was sexually assaulted while traveling in an auto rickshaw near Chennai at midnight on Monday. The Tamil Nadu police have seized the CCTV footage of the area and are in the final stages of identifying three men who attacked the girl.
It happened at Kilambakkam bus terminus where the girl was waiting for the bus. A auto rickshaw driver came and asked her to get in. When she said no, he grabbed her and threw her into the vehicle. Two other men followed him and the three of them assaulted her at knife point while the car was in motion.
Her screams were heard by people walking by and they called the police. The auto rickshaw was chased by a team of officers but the assailants were able to escape after throwing her off the vehicle on the road. A witness, who happened to be a cop, assisted the girl and ensured that she was okay before the police came.
The victim, who hails from another state and is based in Salem, is currently under the care of.
In response to the incident, Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai accused the state government of not doing enough to prevent sexual assault, stating that sexual assault has become a ‘heinous crime’ in Tamil Nadu. He also noted that there is an increase in the availability of drugs and a decrease in the number of people arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The investigations are still going on and the attempts to arrest the suspects are still on the process.
