Indian Navy’s next generation stealth frigate INS Nilgiri docks in Chennai, marking its maiden homecoming to the state that inspired its name. Built under the indigenous Project 17A, INS Nilgiri represents India’s cutting-edge shipbuilding expertise and maritime strength. Commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 15, 2025, the vessel is the first of seven stealth guided-missile frigates designed to enhance India’s naval power.
INS Nilgiri draws its name from the iconic Nilgiri Hills, symbolizing resilience, courage, and heritage. The Defence Ministry highlighted this visit as a proud bridge between the mountains and the seas, reflecting the ship’s roots and its role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests.
Commanded by Captain Nitin Kapoor, with a crew of 27 officers and 250 sailors, the 149-meter-long frigate boasts a displacement of 6,670 tonnes. It’s equipped with advanced Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles, BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, close-in weapon systems, and torpedo launchers. Powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, the ship achieves speeds up to 32 knots and a range of over 5,500 nautical miles.
Designed by the Warship Design Bureau and built at Mazagon Dock and Garden Reach Shipbuilders, INS Nilgiri exemplifies India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and indigenous defence manufacturing prowess.
